The fest imports great Japanese movies to the Philippines.

The Japan Foundation, in association with Embassy of Japan in the Philippines and Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP), presents the 22nd edition of EIGASAI.

The festival, which happens from July 3 thru August 25, 2019, imports an exciting selection of Japanese films, including special screenings of Hirokazu Kore-eda’s films, “After the Storm”, “The Third Murder”, and his 2018 Palm d’Or winner, “Shoplifters”.

The fest will open with Bernard Rose’s “Samurai Marathon”.

The principal lineup includes films in different genres, including feature-length anime titles. Below is the full list of entries.

The Crimes that Bind (Katsuo Fukuzawa)

Laughing Under the Clouds (Katsuyuki Motohiro)

Mixed Doubles (Junichi Ishikawa)

One Cut of the Dead (Sinichiro Ueda)

Perfect World (Kenji Shibayama)

Yakiniku Dragon (Chong Wishing)

The Tears of Malumpati (Keita Meguro)

Mirai (Mamoru Hosoda)

The festival’s closing film is Yukihiko Tsutsuimi’s 2018 drama, “The House Where the Mermaid Sleeps”.

In addition to these films, EIGASAI is also due to bring Katsumi Nojiri’s “Lying to Mom”, Best Film at the 2019 Tokyo International Film Festival (Independent Japanese Cinema category), to the Philippines.

EIGASAI 22 will have seven legs in total, spanning major cities like Pangasinan, Cebu, Bacolod, Davao, and more.

The festival kicks off with its Metro Manila leg at:

  • the Red Carpet Cinema, Shangri-La Plaza (from July 3 to 14);
  • Robinsons Place Tacloban (July 18 to 21);
  • SM City Legazpi (July 18 to 21);
  • SM City Iloilo (July 25 to 28);
  • Abreeza Mall Davao (August 1 to 4);
  • Cultural Center of the Philippines (August 2 to 11);
  • SM City Rosales, Pangasinan (August 8 to 11);
  • Cine Adarna, UPFI (August 14 to 17);
  • Ayala Center Cebu (August 15 to 18);
  • and Gateway Complex, Cubao (August 22 to 25).

All screenings are free of charge, excluding screenings at the Red Carpet Cinema at the Shari-La Plaza Manila which costs PHP100 per screening.
