Joe Lynch’s wacko take on “Venom” is enlivened by his ingenious stylistic choice of telling the story in the fashion of a mockumentary. It’s an obvious ode to the Belgian gem of modern cinema, “Man Bites Dog”, in which a group of unsuspecting filmmakers doggedly tail the gnarly misadventures of a sharply dressed apathetic killer. Here, a struggling but sprightly journalist named Eddie Brock (Ryan Kwanten of “True Blood”) commisions three French documentarians to film a gruelling day-in-the-life documentary in which he muses about his slanted perspectives on truth, violence, and justice. “Guys like me are out on the streets, collecting these stories,” he intones. “We put the caution in cautionary tale, you know?”

Lynch’s short drops these comic book references aplenty, building a satisfying run-through of how Eddie Brock’s myopic notions of truth came to be. The influence of French cinema, which pulsates in every moment of the short, is crucial. Events unfold in a delicately vérité manner, a style that’s popular among French filmmakers—chief champions of truth in cinema—during the time on which the film is set. Of course, the ineffability of an extraterrestrial symbiote which afflicts Eddie Brock’s body offers a stark contrast to this realism, which amplifies the short’s message to a much fuller quality.
