It’s looking like a proper zombie flick, gory bits and all.

Mikhail Red has a busy couple of years ahead.
A handful of genre films have his schedule filled, including the Bea Alonzo-led supernatural shocker, Eerie—slated for release later this month—and the heist thriller, Dead Kids, which is already far into development. Though I have my personal reservations for the former, the fact that a young filmmaker is actively hustling to make Filipino genre films excites me.
Also, let’s not forget: his EJK assassination-thriller, Neomanila, is on its nationwide theatrical release this week. If you haven’t seen it yet, you should.
Among Red’s many projects in the pipeline is the much-advertised zombie flick, Block Z. The appeal is obviously lent by its top-tier cast, Julia Barretto and Joshua Garcia, but beyond that is the fact that this, if ever, is our first proper Filipino zombie flick—save, perhaps, for T.A. Acierto’s The Grave Bandits (2012).
For context, the film is set in “a quarantined university during a deadly viral outbreak, and follows a ragtag group of students who must band together if they are to survive.”
The film is directed by Red and written by Mixkaela Villalon. It stars Barretto, Garcia, Ian Veneracion, Maris Racal, Dimples Romana, Mccoy De Leon, and Yves Flores.
Block Z is expected to wrap filming sometime in May and is eyeing a late 2019 release. After that, Red has The Grandstand lined up, a new film he’s set to make with Globe Studios based on the 2010 Quirino Grandstand hostage crisis.
