Warner Bros. has dropped the first teaser-trailer for Mike Flanagan’s long-awaited sequel to Stanley Kubrick’s 1980 masterpiece, “The Shining”. The new film, titled “Doctor Sleep”, is set forty years after the events of the original.

Stephen King, who wrote the novel on which the film is based, has expressed very publicly his disapproval of Kubrick’s take on “The Shining”. There’s a whole publicized history on this, but what you need to know is that Kubrick’s 80’s adaptation was so far off-course from King’s novel that it became the subject of many-a dissertations on authorial ownership. The literal million-dollar question with Flanagan’s adaptation is: which version of “The Shining” does it continue?

The answer is both. According to Flanagan himself: “The answer to all of those questions for us has always been, ‘Yes.’ It is an adaptation of the novel Doctor Sleep, which is Stephen King’s sequel to his novel, The Shining. But this also exists very much in the same cinematic universe that Kubrick established in his adaptation of The Shining. And reconciling those three, at times, very different sources has been kind of the most challenging and thrilling part of this creatively for us.”

And if you’re wondering, Stephen King is on board with the project, not only with his blessing but also encouragement. Flanagan’s very first moves with the film was sat down with the author, and apparently if the acrimony over anything persisted, he wouldn’t have pushed through.

That leaves us here, with the production of “Doctor Sleep” locked into a November release.

The new film stars Ewan McGregor as Danny Torrance from the 1980 “The Shining” movie—the trailer goes to great lengths to remind you this is as much a sequel to the adaptation as it is that to King’s 2013 novel—who, ironically, succumbs into alcoholism much like his father had been. The story picks up when he meets a kindred spirit (Kyliegh Curran) at the hospice where he works.

Here’s the full synopsis:

Years following the events of “The Shining”, a now-adult Dan Torrence meets a young girl with similar powers as his and tries to protect her from a cult known as The True Knot who prey on children with powers to remain immortal.

Rebecca Ferguson, Jacob Tremblay, Carl Lumbly, and Alex Essoe join McGregor and Curran in the cast.

The film is written and directed by Mike Flanagan, who as you’ll know, is no stranger to Stephen King adaptations having made 2017’s “Gerald’s Game” as well as other hit horror adaptations such as “The Haunting of Hill House”, a modern-day retelling of Shirley Jackson’s beloved 1959 horror novel.
