Between Westworld, Rebirth, and Fyre Fraud, the island hospitality industry hasn’t received much love from movies and television. Maybe Fantasy Island, the new film from Jeff Wadlow which finds a group of strangers living their life’s greatest desires will be more generous?
Lol. Of course not.
Based on the popular 70’s show of the same name, the film takes the same central premise in which a ragtag group of yuppies enjoys their luxurious stay at a remote island—until they learn they are in for a horrific trip, that is. “Your life is about to change,” says the menacing hotel staff. “I hope you’re ready.”
Leading the cast is Lucy Hale, who Wadlow has worked with previously in the 2018 horror film, Truth Or Dare. Michael Peña makes an appearance as the enigmatic Mr. Roarke, who oversees the island. Maggie Q, Portia Doubleday, Michael Rooker, Ryan Hansen, and Jimmy O. Yang also star.
Fantasy Island, the TV show, aired from the late 70’s to the early 80’s. Presented in episodic format a la The Twilight Zone, the show produced some unforgettable episodes such as “With Affection, Jack the Ripper”, “Vampire”, “Midnight Waltz”, and more.
The film, which is due out early next year, has released its first trailer below:
