“Game of Thrones” Prequel, “House of the Dragon” is Coming to HBO!

game of thrones prequel house of the dragon

A Game of Thrones prequel entitled “House Of The Dragon” is reportedly coming to HBO. The prequel will be a TV series created by George RR Martin together with Ryan Condal (co-creator and showrunner of “Colony”). Director Miguel Sapochnik and Condal are showrunners and executive producers, with Sapochnik directing the pilot and several other episodes.

“House of the Dragon” will be based on George RR Martin’s book “Fire & Blood”, which serves as a companion book to “Game of Thrones”. The series will have 10 episodes, and will show us the story of House Targaryen at the early days of Westeros, 300 years before the events that we saw in the “Game of Thrones” series.

The prequel was announced at WarnerMedia’s HBO Max presentation. HBO Max is WarnerMedia’s own streaming platform, and will presumably pick up the series covering the House Targaryen history.

Bloodmoon Cancellation

The announcement came as a surprise after another planned prequel rumoured to be called “Bloodmoon” starring Naomi Watts, was reportedly cancelled. This happened despite having the pilot of “Bloodmoon” to have already been filmed early this year. Bloodmoon’s cancellation came just hours before the announcement of the go signal for “House Of The Dragon”.

Interestingly, “Game of Thrones” writers David Benioff and DB Weiss has also announced earlier this week that they had left the next Star Wars trilogy.

Game of Thrones Prequel Release Date

“House of the Dragon” still does not have a release date. What we know though is that HBO Max is set to launch on May 2020. If the series is planned to appear on the streaming platform first, we can hope that it will also come out around the same time.
