Reality Entertainment just dropped the official “main” trailer for its hotly anticipated horror movie, Kuwaresma. Since its announcement earlier this year, the Unreel team has cast its eyes on its development. This is due, in large part, to the fact that it is Sharon Cuneta’s first foray into the horror genre—that dreaded Carlo J. Caparas’ truth-based thriller, The Lilian Velez Story, notwithstanding.
Kuwaresma is directed by Erik Matti, who made the 2004 horror Pa-Siyam, which in my book is one of the better Filipino horror films spun out of the studio system. It follows a mother (Sharon Cuneta) trying to navigate around the passing of their daughter, Manuela, who is believed to have committed suicide.
That raises eyebrows—you see, the family’s patriarch, played by John Arcilla, acts like the spawn of Vic Silayan in Kisapmata and John Nicholson in The Shining—and it certainly raises Luis’, Manuela’s twin brother, who travels back to his native Baguio when he learns of his twin sister’s death. “Napakatagal mong nawala dito, Luis,” notes his mother. “Hindi mo alam ang lawak ng paghihirap na dinanas ng kapatid mo.”

Kuwaresma is written by Katski Flores (Still Life) and directed by Erik Matti. It opens in theaters nationwide May 15, 2019.
Unreel is the definitive outlet on Philippine and world cinema. Built on one crucial notion — every frame is magic.
