WATCH: "Morbius" trailer teases Sony's vampire antihero

Jared Leto uncloaks as Sony Spider-verse’s vampire antihero in first “Morbius” trailer

Sony has bee making some vexing creative decisions recently. I think I mean that as a compliment.

Last year’s Venom is a balls-to-the-wall superhero romp that, props to its instincts, lets its own weirdness be its own thing. It gifted us indelible moments, like Tom Hardy acting as if he’s in a totally different movie, not the ridiculous one he’s actually in where his character eats a raw lobster and bathes in an indoor aquarium. That movie, in turn, gifted Sony massive returns in the box office, kicking into gear what we will eventually know as the Sony Spider-verse.

Today, Sony has dropped the first trailer for Morbius, the next solo outing in the franchise, starring Jared Leto. Interestingly, Leto has appeared as Joker in Suicide Squad in 2016, much to the dismay of fans. Here, he plays the eponymous ailing genius, who somehow unlocks superhuman strength after a trip to a remote excavation site. Watch the trailer, in full, above.

Two things we’ve spotted on the trailer: One, that callback to Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man films. It is absolutely perplexing how Sony could let it slip through the final cut of this first trailer. It could mean something or nothing at all. Two, the last scene, which sees Michael Keaton reprising his role as Vulture. This tells us that Morbius will be, in some fashion, be tied to the MCU Spider-Man story, and by extension, so too might be the events in Venom and other subsequent Sony Spider-verse movies.

Directed by Daniel Espinosa, Morbius will open in Philippine theaters in July 2020.
