DC has given us a first-look for its forthcoming superhero movie, Shazam!, in the form of a lip-smackin’, pitch-perfect trailer.
The trailer dropped at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, where DC unveiled details and teasers in its other upcoming IPs, such as Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman 1984 and James Wan’s Aquaman.
The new film chronicles the origin story of Billy Batson, an orphan who, for the kindness and heroism he wields, gets chosen by a wizard to receive superpowers, the extent of which are determined by how well he learns to use them. We get much footage of that, in true Captain Marvel*-like fashion: with Freddie Freeman by his side, chortling at his first few failed attempts at superflight.
*Captain Marvel, as any comic book fan would know, was the original name of Shazam, until DC officially changed it in 2011 over general confusion, what with the other Captain Marvel property over at Marvel’s stable.
We get to see Zachary Levi in the Shazam suit, doing what any teenager would upon learning he’s obtained immense superpowers, which is mostly fooling around. It’s not like there’s no central baddie here: the trailer offers a glimpse of Dr. Thaddeus Sivana, played by a super-ominous looking Mark Strong, as he easily blocks an attack from Shazam. Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam won’t make his appearance in the DCEU until his own solo movie, but that doesn’t mean out fingers are crossed for at least a cameo.
Directed by David F. Sandberg (Lights Out) the film is expected to hit Philippine theaters on April 9th, 2019.
