The first trailer for William Eubank’s “Underwater”, a new sci-fi thriller starring Kristen Stewart, has surfaced. And things are looking, well, nondescript.

But here’s what’s kicking me in the balls. Right after “Personal Shopper” I have pledged part of my life to watch absolutely every film Stewart ends up in, including the “Charlie’s Angels” reboot. The film, which casts her as a subterranean mechanic with oozing BDE and golden buzz to match, plays the just-like-“Alien”-but-underwater card so hard that I’m not really mad about it.

There’s a whole cast to fill up an expedition crew, including Vincent Cassel, T.J. Miller, John Gallagher Jr., Jessica Henwick, Mamoudou Athie, and Gunner Wright. I can’t contest a cast like this, can I?

As for Eubank, his last directorial effort was the 2014 indie sci-fi “The Signal”, a bendy and twisty thriller that casts Laurence Fishburne in a Morpheus-like role in that he tails a young man who is believed to have encountered the titular phenomena.

In “Underwater”, a crew of underwater researchers must scramble to safety after an earthquake devastates their subterranean laboratory. It opens across theaters on January 10, 2020.
